Just in case someone might find this interesting. So, I thought I'd give an indoor autogyro a try. Why? because it's wacky! Will it work? not sure, but I'm up for a challenge. I'm up for something a bit different. After doing a bunch or reading I have realized that these machines are not as straight forward as they might seem. Think helicopter in many ways. Anyhow; my initial try proved to be a problem with getting the rotors to spin up. They stayed still even with a finger start and a run. Even though they had a negative incidence, I think they had too thick of an airfoil for their chord, and consequently not enough blade area. This is typically what happens when you scale down an aircraft, certain surfaces have to be scaled at different ratios in order to perform correctly. I carved new blades from Adams foam board, added a bamboo leading edge, covered them with packing tape, and a revised the rotor plate to allow for more flapping (cyclic). The chord is now 30mm with 4 degrees negative incidence. They were originally 12mm with about the same incidence. Now if I walk forward, the rotors spin up quite nicely. Next......to the gym on Sunday and see if I can get it to work.

Your right, they are wacky I've never understood, really, how they worked but after seeing yours the last time at the gym, I was very interested in seeing it fly. Seems like a fair bit to understand especially to make one for indoor. Very cool man

If looks mean anything ....it looks like it should fly. Hope to see it in action next Sunday.

Someone please grab some photos for the MAAC newsletter!!! The Autogyro didn't make a stellar display this morning .....with a running start she nosed dived into the floor. a few sections let go at the glue joints but completely repairable in short order.
I have a few pics prior to launch and a couple after if your interested AstroFlyer just PM me and I'll forward to your email address.
Here are some lo-res copies:
