I have started to prepare, to get ready, to think, I will begin, this long overdue build........soon It will be a purpose built model that needs to carry 5-7 lbs. What motor/engine do you guys recommend. Im okay with either nitro or gas. It just needs to be able to carry the weight with little effort and still fit in the model without too much mods. Any Thoughts?

To start it off I gather for this kind of calculation you need to add weight of plane itself - so figure on 5 lbs?
So engine capable of lifting/or thrust of 10-12lbs?

I have a short kit and all the plans for the 12' telemaster and I'm planning on strapping on an old time Quadra 40. It won't do a snap roll or go vertical but should only fly around scale. (with 1 lb of candy on board) BOMB DROP !! so based on that wing loading for a much bigger wing, I'm thinking you will have to go larger (more power) than an old time Quadra 40 would have.

Your right Marc. The plane and an extra 5-7lbs is what i am looking for.
Interesting about your Quadra 40 Kevin. That sounds like the gasser with magneeto?
I have few gas motors but all to big for the real estate on the plane and no nitros on hand big enough. Im leaning toward a dle20 but im not sure it will fit

With the weight you plan on sending skyward you will have to go Gas. You just need to find the right balance between size and power.

An 8 foot telemaster will fly fine with a 5-7 pound load, and using a .60 2 stroke, or 90 four stroke. You guys forget that 1/5th scale warbirds used to fly on .60s? All the Dave Platt 1/5th warbirds did. Guys have been doing that for decades, long before reliable gas engines came on the market. All depends on rate of climb you're looking to achieve, not so much speed, as the telemaster, like a Cub, is drag-limited. A 20 cc gasser is a good way to go though, if you're looking for increased endurance/range, and a really good rate of climb, but able to putter around all day at idle. With the .90 four stroke in mine, and no wind, I can still get airborne in about 10 feet. With a 20cc gasser, and the bigger prop, probably about 5 feet!

If you want to be sure, why don't we rig up a wing cradle for my Telemaster, and try adding weight, a pound at a time, on the CG, and see how she behaves?
